The performers Mickael Marso Riviere and Navala Chaudhari showed a sensual and exotic mix of bboying and capoeira accompanied by live music by Jason Kalidas using Bansuri and Tabla. As a viewer you feel like you are in a dessert with the sun rising revealing Chaudhari in an elegant contortionist position before she starts gently moving like a snake across the sand. Then Riviere comes in with a powerful solo of break dancing moves before both performers break into a well-tuned duet.

More about Decalage can be found on
http://www.companydecalage.co.uk/
and excerpt of the piece:
http://www.dance-tech.net/video/company-decalage-appel-at

More than a year ago I produced the 3 minutes video TRENCH with Company Chameleon while they were still in development of their final piece Rites. Thus, it was very exciting to see the full 42 minutes performance of the complete piece Rites of which Trench is a section. Rites is a breath taking dance work that demands everything from its performers Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner. Drawn from personal experiences of what it means to be a man through showing the different stages that shape us: family, friends, happy moments and extreme situations. Company Chameleon really gives the audience something they can relate to and to take away with them.

More about Company Chameleon on
http://www.companychameleon.com/
and excerpt of the piece
http://www.dance-tech.net/video/rites-introduction-by-company

The third piece I would like to mention is The Simplicity of Grasping Air by Lindsay John. A large floor and back wall projection of slowed down water footage by Jane McInally reminds of a moving Van Gogh's painting and works well with John's Butoh movements. The notes I took along the piece say that it is too slow for my awareness which I mean in a positive way because I feel I am there in every single bit of the moment. My mind is not rushing anywhere...it is just here. I have to really look how things evolve...

Another article about Lindsay John's The Simplicity of Grasping Air can be found on
http://www.theskinny.co.uk/article/46527-the-simplicity-of-grasping-air

One Step

One Step - Hickle-Dee-Pickle-Dee
CreationEditor
Jul 19, '09, 10:33 PM

Title:
"One Step - Hickle-Dee-Pickle-Dee"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkh362hlgng

The following video has been inspired by The
Scotsman report 'One giant gaffe for mankind'
about the Nasa taping over the original footage of
1969 Moon landing.

Produced for the Dance Films Association, Inc's
competition 'What moves you? 48 Hour Challenge'.

17th - 19th July 2009

Brief:
The four performers are elderly people who have
dementia trying to
remember watching the
first steps on the moon by Neil Armstrong.
This video draws an analogy between
losing memory and lost visual documentation
through words and movements.

Inspiration:
The trying steps and movements of the elderly
performers and the first step on the moon by
Neil
Armstrong as well as losing
memories and materialistic things.

Grading Matters

rading Matters
CreationEditor
Jun 22, '09, 09:24 AM
Currently the Edinburgh International Film Festival, short EIFF, is running and bringing together a fantastic selection of films as well as very interesting people from the moving image industry.
Last Thursday the restored version of The Red Shoes was shown at the Filmhouse, unfortunately I could not make it. However when it screened 2/3 years ago in the cinema at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon, I remember very well that I took a day of work to see it on the Big Screen and it was amazing! Moira Shearer's aura, movement and pace as well as the ones of the film just draw you in.
Last night spoke to Craig McCall from Mofilms and he had seen the restored verison of The Red Shoes on Thursday. We discussed the physical empathy this film creates within the audience as well as the great dancing personalities of Shearer and Leonide Massine. McCall added that the new colour grading gives the film a whole new depth and emotional emphasis and should not be underestimated. Personally, I mainly focus on the look of the movements and the composition of the frame but I will now keep a keener eye on colours, too and I cannot wait to see the 'new' version of The Red Shoes!

for more information about digital restoration on The Red Shoes, see page 18 in
Roughcuts June - August 2009

Enjoy!

DANCE:FILM II

DANCE:FILM
CreationEditor
May 25, '09, 12:26 AM

Hi,
the lovely Scottish capital Edinburgh is currently running its very own DANCE:FILM festival with great success!!! Dancebase curator Steph Wright has put an exciting program mix of famous films like Swing Time and Flashdance as well as screenings of independent and international screendance makers together. I went to see the two programs 'Dance With Camera' and 'Dance For Camera' and was blown away by the eclectic collection of high quality screendance. I happy to see that 'Screendance' is becoming a known genre that has grown from filming your friend with a camcorder to creating proper concepts that combine film techniques with skillful movements.

Much more to come but here's what's happening in the next couple of days!

GYPSY - Monday 25th May 18.00
A super rare screening of Mervyn LeRoy's 1962 Gypsy on the big screen! Shipped all the way from LA for this one off showing, make sure you don't miss it! Book your tickets here.

Invitation to the Dance: Body & Taboo - Tuesday 26th May 18.15

In 2005 Gerda König, a German choreographer who has muscular dystrophy, brought together people with disabilities and able-bodied dancers, many of them from impoverished shanty towns, in an 8-week workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The film documents the artistic process of creating a performance with such a heterogeneous group of people and at the same time gives the viewer an insight into the culture and social conditions of this East African city.

EXTRA Flashdance: 80s tastic Jazz workshop, Sat 30th May 18.00-20.00

Due to popular demand, we've had to put on an extra session of the Flashdance: 80s tastic Jazz workshop which was sold out and there's still a few places left so get booking here!

TINY DANCE FILMS

The Tiny Dance Films kiosks are in the foyers of both Filmhouse and Dance Base. No other form of editing or creation of video is so interested in how we actually physically feel about it. It is concerned and cares about the viewer, aims to translate to the audience the personal intimate experience of the dancer, dance and the spectators themselves. Video is also able to show and point out moments that we cannot see live but that are still there.

This notion intrigues me very much but where do I look next...I always keep on looking at us, our human body, the dancer and the dance. However, I undertook a fantastic Butoh class with Lindsay John at Dancebase last week and his philosophy of looking at the world is really inspiring. During class he talked about a falling leaf he saw that landed over there and not over here and he wondered why it make this decision. Personally, I probably live 80% of my awake time in front of a screen, 10% training and the rest...not as much in my garden or just looking at nature as I wish.

It relaxes me looking at my pets: my cockatiel does an incredible move where she brings her claw from behind her wing to the top of her head. My frog reminds me of our very basic, primal motions. In fact, my video about them is my most viewed clip on youtube!

Shaky Frog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYhii81IUhM

But back to my train of thoughts on changing my perception on things. It is not enough to look at movements of nature but how does it feel and why. Referring to Janine Benyus in her presentation on "12 sustainable design ideas from nature": looking at a shell is not just pretty but ask why is it that way and the answer is: it is comfortable housing!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n77BfxnVlyc

Ok, where I am going from here...I do not know but I like my starting point and happy to receive any feedback and comments about it. I am widening my horizon on not merely how does dance feel to us but how does nature feel about its patterns, structures and decisions. I expect the answers to be very pure, well reasoned and plausible but still intriguing and maybe even challenging.

Wishes,
Sabine Klaus Creation Editor
http://creationeditor.co.uk/

DANCE PLUS

Dance Plus
CreationEditor
May 22, '09, 09:37 PM
In Short:
It is a series of three documentaries about dance and technology bringing to light the current development of movement research, meaning and context. The overall title is “Dance Plus”.

THE PROJECT:
The 1st Documentary is about Jeannette Ginslov who stems from Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the Founder and Director of Walking Gusto Productions multimedia dance theatre, a choreographer, video dance maker and multimedia artist. Her video dance works are presented locally and internationally. Her current work “Sanctum” is an interactive, multi sensory Screendance work that exposes the heinous crime of FGM or Female Genital Mutilation and attempts to elicit the viewer’s response of empathy to an act of cruelty perpetrated on women. Sanctum emphasises technology serving content and audience reception. The Screendance medium will capture the experience and sensation of the restricted dancing body interacting with sites of interactivity that amplifies the kinesthetic and emotional content in order to shape Screendance reception.

The 2nd documentary is about Arthur Elsenaar’s “Artifacial” which is an Algorithmic Facial Choreography. “Artifacial Expression” is an art and research project that investigates the computer controlled human face as a medium for kinetic art and develops algorithms for facial choreography. Besides the Leonardo Award for Excellence Elsenaar received an "Anerkennung" from Prix Ars Electronica for his work into facial choreography. Most recently The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam has acquired the algorithmic facial choreography piece entitled "Face Shift" for their permanent collection.

The 3rd documentary is about the award winning Katrina McPherson and Simon Fildes who have been collaborating on single screen video dance works and web-dances at hyperchoreography.org, for over 10 years, but their latest project MOVE-ME.com combines their individual interests in dance and interactive installations that takes them in a new direction with significant international success. The move-me booth is a special video booth touring to theatre foyers, festival venues, arts centres, galleries, universities and dance agencies. Over 10,000 people have entered the booth to try it out and 2000 completed video clips have been recorded and are on the website. The booth tour visited 35 venues in the UK and Holland to April 2008 including Sadler’s Wells London in September 2006 and it was also in Australia and New Zealand during the summer of 2008.

Why I want to document this:
The first silent films were often described as early forms of ‘screendance’; a fact that is nearly forgotten. Our physical connection and muscular empathy to movements on screen is vital to our overall perception and wellbeing. There is an immense power and potential in the exploration of this medium and my three documentaries want to capture this. It serves as a purpose to document three of our most interesting contemporary video dance makers and raises awareness of their works

DANCE:FILM

DANCE:FILM in Edinburgh
CreationEditor
May 18, '09, 09:23 PM
Hi Guys,

two of my films are in DANCE:FILM...TRENCH is screening in Dance For Camera on Sat at 11.30am and URBAN DANCERS is in Dance With Camera on Sat at 13.30! I recently wrote a review about my Canon HV20 for http://smiley-plus.com/ :

Canon HV20 is a wonderful small camcorder that suits every filmmaker's budget, however, not necessarily the ones with big hands. As a woman I was looking for the perfect and professional camcorder that has all the settings on manual option as well as one that I can hold comfortably. I do not want to point on certain other cameras that do not have the shoulder option like the Canon XL1 but that are still head-heavy and literally impossible to be handled by anyone with tiny hands. And I found HV20, with 1.2lbs (without battery) it is light on your hands even if you attach the extra accessories like the wide angle lens and the microphone that both turn this little home video cam into your pro movie shooter. It is very attractive for women with its small dials and buttons, especially the zoom adjuster but I found it impossible to be used by a man. So ladies, it is your machine, do not give it to your man!

Here are some standard information: HV20 records in HDV and SD DV onto miniDV tape and 10 times optical zoom but there is the option to attach a tele lens. The instant focus works very well but for the manual way there are the assistant functions of magnifying and peaking to get it all perfect. However, this camcorder is most famous for its native 25p in PAL mode which does not require any pulldown removal techniques making it so easy to work with in post!

Some people say that HV20 does not work well in low lighting conditions, however, my first shoot I did with HV20 was at sun set and then in a dark forest using only a torch. HV20 handled the situation fantastically and you can watch it for yourself in my video TRENCH featuring the dancers Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PciUp7-Gsuo

To sum up, HV20 is a camcorder I would buy again!

More indepth and useful information can be found on the HV20 dedicated website:
http://www.hv20.com/

Hope you enjoyed the review!

written by Sabine Klaus Creation Editor
http://creationeditor.co.uk/

Movement on Screen

Movement on Screen 2009
CreationEditor
May 1, '09, 03:14 AM
Movement on Screen 2009 was a total sensation! I already enjoyed the previous year but the 2009 festival was miles better. The Cornerhouse, which is pulsing hub for contemporary visual art and it is also located right in the heart of Manchester, was a great venue and moves had its own delegate centre.

The overall theme of the festival was 'Tell your story' that guided and accompanied the audience through the various screenings, talks and forums. To offer a narration makes screendance accessible to a wider audience which is great. The selected films for the screenings were of very high quality -contents and productionwise- raising the bar for future work!

More in depth will follow from me about the festival but until then I want to recommend to view the photos:
http://www.movementonscreen.org.uk/page.asp?id=2822

and film I managed to make between attending 22 events:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zy2nkjiFg0

Sabine Klaus
www.creationeditor.co.uk

Rafael Bonachela

Rafael Bonachela's
CreationEditor
Apr 21, '09, 07:18 AM
I just listened to Rafael Bonachela's interview with Olivia Stewart. The boys and girls are super energetic and totally into dance and keen to put something together for the videos. The moment they know the camera is rolling they are completely focused and total pros!

However, what absolutely positively surprised me was that when we showed them some DVDs as part of the introduction to screendance they absolutely understood how the digital effects were done and could even explain most of them. Wow, the next generation grows up with such a different understanding and approach to the digital world! But saying this, the group of youngster made very quickly clear to us that although they enjoy watching the dance scenes from "Step Up", they actually want to get up and make their own and be active rather than passively sit around and stare at a screen. I love this!

Looking forward to the next couple of days!

Sabine Klaus
http://creationeditor.co.uk/

More Info
http://www.biginfalkirk.com/dance/screendancefilmproject/

Jackson & our time

Jackson and our time
CreationEditor
Mar 30, '09, 09:40 PM
I have been reading about the connection and relationship of contemporary dance and pop music development and style history and how they feed of each other. AM
Hi All,

I want to propose an "International Screendance Houseparty" for Friday 1st May 2009. Get your friends around, stick on a pizza and watch some good video dance work.

Of course you can choose a different date that is more suitable for you but it would be great if until then we could share links of screendance films we like and consider as good. It is an opportunity for yourself to be the curator of your own private dance on screen festival, create a platform for screendance and a chance to show friends who maybe do not know anything about this genre what it actually is.

Here are my couple of suggestions:

Rubberman Accepts The Nobel Prize by Physical TV, 2001
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pgM0pyPRl4

RUBBERBANDance - I can only agree on that dance film screenings should happen more often. Speaking from my own work and feedback I receive from friends, family and critics is that in public screenings the same piece of work is often well received and understood while most video dances lose their fascination online (think youtube). The problem is not only the lower quality that reduces the effects of sound and speed of movements but also the moment of 'live' performance in front of an audience is taken away from the work. The unique specialty of video dance is that it is closely related to live dance and thus its presentation in which it needs the space, the sound echoing of walls and an audience sharing the experience of movements, camerawork and edit. Personally, I am very audience-focused, some of you might know my work that aims on creating all-senses-incorporating interaction with the viewer through live performance and/or video installations in controlled spaces that enhance the experience and interaction.

To return to the initial starting point of this discussion: yes, I hope more video dance events will happen, hopefully more dance places, cinemas and co venues will promote and open their spaces to show this genre of film. Currently, the Edinburgh Festival is happening which offers opportunities for video dance presentations for example.

My aim is to increase the possibilities of showing dance work. Together with curator Alexandra Ross, I set up the traveling exhibition The State of Play that mixes live performance, audience involvement and interactive video dance projection:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHmrSe5ZpBw
more info about this can be found on my website www.creationeditor.co.uk

I am also involved with the events of Iam-Digital that fuses live performance, video dance and live music. In April 2008 she teamed up with dance duo Company Chameleon to produce the promo ‘Trench’ for their upcoming show ‘Rites’.

The slightly abstract story is performed by Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner who portray two young soldiers going to war in an unknown land. Suddenly they are confronted with the real terror of bombs and living in a daily angst of getting shot. Those extreme emotional situations bring them closer together as friends. Until one of them realises the senselessness in the suffering while the other one seeks the moment of glory.

After studio rehearsals, storyboarding and a rekkie, the trailer-style video was filmed outside Penicuik at night and the budget was spent on torches, petrol and energy bars. Director of Photography and Editor Klaus shoot the entire project on a Canon HV20 and then finalised it in Final Cut Pro with special effects added in from After Effects.

Shooting at night-time generated an accentuated look while the hand-held torches enhanced the performers’ movements. The overlaid footage creates confusing parallel scenarios as well as reflecting the protagonists lost sense of space and emotional disorientation. The sound produced by Al Lorraine mirrors the actions; one soldier is building a human rifle out of his comrade whilst a gun being put together is audible.

Meanwhile the 4-minute video premiered at the IAM-Digital Event and a short version of Trench is currently broadcasted on Virgin Media Shorts .

More information can be found on Sabine Klaus’ website www.creationeditor.co.uk .

Thank you very much for voting
Sabine Klaus
www.creationeditor.co.uk
info@creationeditor.co.uk

RESEARCH

Research 2008
CreationEditor
Jul 11, '08, 10:35 AM
- For nearly ten years my work and research has increasingly revolved and dealt with the meaning of movement through video art, installations and live performance. I am working on my personal research project called ‘Performance Practice X’ which investigates into the effects of visual stimuli through vision onto body and then through the body onto an emotional level. My interest particularly focuses on how to increase participation and experience of the audience. ‘Performance Practice X’ is split into five key subject that concentrate on:

1. metakinesis (muscular empathy): interactive video installation (e.g. art work ‘Projector Dancers’ using the software G-Vision to create interaction between video and viewer, 2007)
2. kinesphere (body in space): enclosed video installations (e.g. art work ‘FEEL’ re-created womb-like scenario in a cushioned box with built-in loud-speakers and video, 2005)
3. hypnotical movements: future research focus (2009/2010)
4. composition (SHAPE): psychological effects of body geometry (current research focus, 2008)
5. live: direct physical interaction through performance art (e.g. The State of Play performances physically incorporate the audience, 2007)

My research and work constantly inspire each other, professionally and artistically. Each of the five themes of Performance Practice X is re-used in my working practice and blended together. The goal is to create a concise and accessible concept of all five that can be of benefit to the presentation of art and commercial video editing because it supports the understanding and incorporation of the viewer.

more on www.creationeditor.co.uk

I AM DIGITAL - VOODOO

Voodoo
CreationEditor
May 22, '08, 07:30 AM
TITLE OF EVENT: I AM DIGITAL - The Voodoo Session

TYPE OF EVENT: CLUB / ARTS Event

DATE: Saturday 31st May 2008
TIME: 9pm-1am
Venue: The Voodoo Rooms, 19a West Register St, Edinburgh, EH2 2AA www.thevoodoorooms.co.uk
Event Website: www.iam-digital.com
Enquiries TEL: 01316677363 or 07877835295
Email: chakan@iam-digital.com

Short Description: After the successful event in February 08 I AM presents a night of international exposition, collaboration, and performance produced with emerging and established artists from Scotland, South Africa, England, Germany, Canada, Venezuela, Cuba, Belgium, France & Spain, the collaborations of which were in many cases instigated in Scotland. Here is my little summary of the event for anyone who – unfortunately - could not make it because you really missed something. It was simply awesome! Pascale Moyse, Festival Director of Moves08, pulled together a well-organized, interesting and elite-level string of events and although the festival was filled with high profile and international input; it still remained very personal and offered a great opportunity to network and to gain real insight into the contemporary world of video dance.
Due to work commitment (I was filming TRENCH with Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner) I had to miss the first two days of the festival but joined in on Thursday and that’s where this blog starts:
Thursday, 24th April 2008
10am – 11:25am Brigitta Hosea at RNCM
Forum 6
Brigitta Hosea spoke about sound drawings and performance drawings and demonstrated various ways to great stunning imagery purely with her voice. She also mentioned how she uses PWM, light sensors and motors in her work and her interest in motion sensitive toys like the ones that can be found in an Argos catalogue. For example, there is a Barbie head that is able to learn a song and sing it with its lips in sync. From here on the discussion was opened up and the “Modified Toy Orchestra” by Brian Duffy from Birmingham was brought up as well as French emotional toys. More physically active gadgets like a Wii or GPS can get literally our bodies involved in an interactive way, e.g. in a project based in London a drawing was created matching the tracks tagged mobilephone carries have taken. And then we wondered how Maurice Merleau-Ponty would have viewed those new aspects of technology and knowledge of sense-data in his philosophy on perception.
USEFUL:
www.arduino.cc
www.tinker.it
b.hosea@csm.arts.ac.uk

11:45am – 1pm Alex Reuben at RNCM
Forum 7
Alex Reuben was once a DJ who moved his passion for dance to filmmaking. His quest to find out why he loves dance and why especially certain styles of music make him dance led him to travel America and documented personal journeys of the roots of dance in “Routes”. It is a sound-led work for cinema that shows an anthropological side of music and dance and was commissioned by Capture/ English Arts Council.
Reuben’s own artistic roots lie in Fine Art which is still reflected in his video work like Que Pasa bringing together painting, sound and ethnic dance. He says that as a DJ, he was able to ‘sculpt’ a room with his music and that he sees similar physical responses created by American artists like Jackson Pollock.

2:30pm – 4pm Donald Glowinsky at RNCM
Forum 8, Keynote speaker
Donald Glowinsky is based at the InfoMus Lab at Casa Paganini at University of Genova, Italy. His research focuses on activity analysis of music and dance performance to develop novel techniques and computational models for understanding non-verbal communication. The interactive software Eyesweb derives from the concept of animacy: kinematics (speed), form (shape) and dynamics (force) to give information of intention. 12 dots are sufficient enough for the human eye to recognize a human being in motion and its emotion, possibly even with as little as 3 dots (GEMEP Corpus).

USEFUL
www.nime.org (festival in June)
Mr Gurk effect 1970
www.infomus.org
www.casapaganini.org
www.eyesweb.org

4pm – 5pm Conference Wrap Up
6pm – 9pm Dance for Camera Night at Sandbar with South East Dance
My friend Christopher Perkins, a photographer and filmmaker based in Manchester wrote a blog about this particular Thursday night’s event
http://snapztalks.blogspot.com

Friday 25th April 2008

10am – 4pm Eyesweb Masterclass with Donald Glowinsky at MMU Cheshire

This workshop gave a hands-on experience with the Eyesweb software which has a straightforward layout resembling a mix of an email inbox and Apple Motion. The icons are kept simple: a camera represents the camera input, a TV is the connection to a monitor; this makes it very easy to achieve interactive results with little start-up help.
Eyesweb is a free software and is currently utilized by about 10,000 users

6:30pm – 8pm Visions d’aillieurs, screening at RNCM

This screening brought together an international selection of various video dance genres. The possibly all-over favourite was Pork by Gido Leytens from Netherlands: a guy is watching TV when a woman on the screen starts speaking, this causes him to have a fit and flashbacks of being treated like a dog explode in. This might not sound too exciting, yet, the way it was shoot, directed, edited and acted worked really well. Personally, I enjoyed Tango Finlandia by Hannu Lajunen because it used animation in an original way and the story of two guys trying to dance/wrestle was very amusing. In Andy Wood’s Three is a Crowd the audience can sense how Wood actually dances with his camera in this uncut version with the improvising, tango-dancing couple. Analog Brother by German Falk Peplinski applies stop-motion animation technique to the dancers/actors with a fantastic overall bluish grade. It throws you back to the 80’s and I couldn’t help thinking of Petshop Boys and Kraftwerk.

8:15pm – 9:45pm Alex Reuben’s Now that’s what I call Modern Disco Dancing Classics Vol 1 at RNCM

Reuben ingeniously mixed together video works he created between 1999 and 2007; a natural flow run throw the varying imagery and proves his djing skills can also be applied to editing and vjing. It blended together hand-held documentary shoots with scripted studio shoots to motion capture animations. The Q & A afterwards offered the opportunity to get some background information about the works.

Saturday 26th April 2008

11am – 1pm Industry Brunch at Sandbar

Apologies if any names are misspelled!

Tamsin Durie from LANWest (Live Art North West) brought to attention the various opportunities that are around in the area of Manchester:
- Emgerency is an Open Performance platform happening in September/October
- 3 yr funding scheme with In-Transit
- LANWest collaborates together with the GreenRoom in Manchester but also with Leeds, Klucol, Carlisle, University of Lancashire, Neville in Lancaster to create a network for producing work and promotion
- Panda-Arts focuses on support for stage, street theatre, live art, film, networking and business development. They offer mentoring and show-starter seminars for graduates and students.

Werner Moebius and Mariella Greil are part of the Sound Networks which affiliates with the Open Source City, an autonomous village and is shaped by its members. On 3rd and 4th May 2008 a Contact Theatre is taking place.

Lesley Ann Rose runs the Northern Film Maker Network which have been established since 2000; it is a dynamic creative non-profit agency helping uprising filmmakers to find funding and crews. The Northern Film Maker newsletter offers members to add in their own call-outs. The programme of events spans from opportunities with Channel 4 and Dazzle Films to networking events…and works together with the Cornerhouse (Manchester) and FACT.

USEFUL

www.panda-arts.org.uk
www.lanwest.org
www.soundnetwork.org.uk
info@northernfilmnetwork.com

Brigitta Hosea contributed to the discussion on Funding & Comprising the fact that in Spain digital artists are not given any support and therefore set up Technearte in Asturias and Bilbao. This organization offers residencies for digital artists in professional companies that e.g. specialize in alarms and mobile phones and welcome the artists’ innovative creative approach.

4pm – 5:30pm Outside the Box, Screening at RNCM

Outside the Box screened my video A_WAY_AWAY which is a mix of live action and animation and can be view on my website www.creationeditor.co.uk. Pan Y Cebollas by Ramona Poenaru plays with the notion living on your object of desire alone; in a raw animalistic way two beautiful women “eat” a naked man laid out on a wooden table. The most inventive film was Kitchen by Francois Vogel from France; a special lens was created to for this video to give the illusion of a spinning room viewed through a fish-eye.

6pm – 7pm Transcended, Screening at RNCM

Philippa Thomas’ Electric Desert brought together footage filmed form a limo in Las Vegas and shoots of a male dancer recreating Loie Fuller’s butterfly. An enigmatic visual mix intensified by music by 7Hertz. Suspension by Nicolas Provost from Belgium draws the audience into hyper-realistic psychedelic exploding clouds and I imaged it would be wonderful to see them in a looping installation or as an interactive backdrop of a performance.

from 8pm Closing Night with Filmmaking Lab Screening at Sandbar

To round up the festival, the screening of videos created over the duration of the festival was just the perfect way. Fantastic innovative ideas with hand-puppets, animation and live shoots accompanied by live music by Tony proved that performance can happen anywhere, anytime and anyway. My personal favourite was Mark Pilkington’s video of the ballerina in a black tutu filmed in the back of a driving car.
The Closing Night also offered another great opportunity to meet more interesting people from the field of video dance and to have time to talk.

To sum up: it simply was a fantastic festival which I thoroughly enjoyed and found very inspiring. It cannot be neglected how warmly we were all welcomed and how comfortable it was to be all in the same hotel around the corner. Many Thanks to Pascale Moyse for bringing us all together for an events-packed festival!

NOTE: ALL THE ABOVE MENTIONED INFORMATION CAME FROM MY OWN PERSONAL NOTES AND SORRY BUT I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THEY ARE 100% CORRECT!
